LuxMea Studio, a design team renowned for their innovative approach, has created Voxel, a 3D printed accessory that pays homage to the iconic 1970 Dodge Charger. Inspired by the robust aesthetic of American muscle cars and the formal complexity that CAD and 3D-printing bring to design and manufacture, Voxel reduces the visual essence of the Charger to its bare minimum.
What sets Voxel apart is its minimalist appearance and the unique lattice structure that captures the timeless quality of the Charger. This intricate design, which exposes the Hemi V8 Engine, is not possible to produce without 3D Printing. The accessory is available in a variety of materials, including resin, brass, silver, and other metals.
The creation of Voxel involved a meticulous process that integrated digital modeling and 3D printing with a constant awareness of parameters and constraints. The car's volume was parametrically generated into voxel grids and interconnected lattice structures, a feat that would be almost impossible to achieve using conventional manufacturing methods.
Voxel is not just a decorative accessory; it is a testament to the power of modern design and technology. The non-conventional aesthetics created by the modular Voxel structure has a minimalist yet timeless quality. Peeking through the grids offers a constantly changing vista, adding an element of interaction to the design.
The project, which started in October 2017 in Boston and concluded in February 2017, was designed and manufactured for Universal Studios. The design process involved extensive research into digital modeling and 3D printing technologies, as well as intensive experimentation to achieve technical stability. The result is a product that perfectly balances mass, vista, and complexity.
Voxel's innovative design has not gone unnoticed. In 2017, it was awarded the Silver A' 3D Printed Forms and Products Design Award, a prestigious accolade that recognizes top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise and innovation.
